The (Secret) Way to Use Facebook to Find Your Target Market

It’s estimated that Facebook stores and classifies about 52,000 data points for each of its users. So anything we click on, read, pages we visit, posts we like, friends we have all become data points. Yep, Facebook has the low-down on each one of us. As a Facebook advertiser, we have access to some of that data, and we can use it to find your target market.

  1. Set up a Facebook Ads account if you don’t already have one. You don’t need to use the ad account right now, but setting it up will give you access to the tools below.
  2. Go to Facebook Ads Manager (click the “Manage Ads” button in the dropdown on your Facebook home page)

3. Once the ad manager loads, you should be able to see your ad account. Click on the account name listed.

4. Click on the Ads Manager dropdown menu on the top left corner. Go the the bottom of the menu and click on “All Tools.”

4. Click on “Audience Insights.”

5. Choose the “Everyone on Facebook” button. Unless you already have a very large Facebook fan base, this will be the only option that Facebook will let you choose.

6. In the “Interests” category, type your competitor’s name (it will have to be a large competitor). You can also add a geographic area, if you wish. Facebook will bring up the characteristics of that page’s followers in that geographic area.

7. You can also type in broad categories of interest in that category, but finding a competitor or two who are close to your geographic area and your niche will help you find target customer.

Once you’ve filled in that information, click around on the audience insights to learn about the demographic and psychographic information of your competitor or a similar business. It will give you insights into what they buy, what pages they like, and other bits of information about your potential customer.

You can even save that audience if you want to target it in future Facebook ads.

In marketing, knowledge about your target customer can make a big difference in how you position your marketing, saving you time and money. Then you can be confident your messages hit the right customer.
